Canada Has Lowered Student Permits for Second Consecutive Year

The immigration ministry has announced that student permits are being capped at 4,37,000 this year, a 10% reduction from the previous year.

Canada is reducing the intake of international students for the second year in a row to ease the pressure on housing, healthcare, and other services.

Canada issued more than 6,50,000 study permits to international students in 2023, roughly tripling the inflow compared to a decade ago. This rapid increase in the population evidently put pressure on sectors like healthcare and education and inflated house prices.

After initiating this cap last year, students now must submit a provisional or territorial attestation letter. This year, master’s and post-doctoral students must also submit this letter.

These letters, a new requirement, will ensure that students are part of the federal government’s international student cap, a measure aimed at maintaining a fair and balanced system.
