Canada’s image as a student-friendly destination is shifting fast. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reported a 62% rejection rate for student visa applications in 2025, up from 52% the previous year and significantly higher than the 40% average of earlier years.
Why This Matters
Nearly 437,000 study permits are expected to be issued this year, a 10% decrease from 2024.
Breakdown:
120,000 for school children/renewals
243,000 for undergraduates/others
73,000 for postgraduate students
New post-graduation work permit rules:
College grads must show B1 English/French proficiency.
University grads need B2 or higher.
Transfers to unapproved courses = no work visa.
Students must also demonstrate higher financial readiness, with living costs set at CAD 20,635 (≈approximately ₹12.6 lakh).
Impact on Indian Students
Reports suggest up to 80% of Indian applications were denied this year. Many students with strong academic records and complete financial documentation still faced rejections, forcing them to consider alternate options such as Europe, the UK, or Australia.
