Good news for Indian students planning to study in Canada! Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is considering the TOEFL Essentials as a designated English test for future acceptance in Canadian permanent economic immigration applications, and it may soon become another pathway for students as well.
Why It Matters for Indian Students
TOEFL Essentials, the new addition, is shorter (1.5 hours) but still tests all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
Designed to reflect real-world communication, it’s especially helpful for students preparing to live, study, and work in Canada.
Note: TOEFL iBT is already widely accepted by Canadian universities and colleges.
Current Status
Although IRCC is not yet accepting TOEFL Essentials scores, ETS is working closely with them to finalize acceptance dates and test center details. This will give Indian students applying for higher studies or PR more flexibility in choosing their language test.
Other Accepted Tests
IELTS
CELPIP
TOEFL iBT
French tests: TEF, DELF
