Will I be able to keep a part time job during my first year?

I’m a first year Aerospace Engineering student this fall and since my family doesn’t have a lot of money for school, I need a job to help with the finances. I have a job prospect right now and wanting to know if I should accept it. I would be expected to work at least part time and wondering if it’s possible during my first year. Thanks

Part time jobs can be helpful in sorting finances and as per law you can work up to 20 hours per week as an international student. Working off campus can be risky as international students are only allowed to work on campus and since you will be pursuing studies in Texas where DHS & ICE are pretty active. I recommend speaking to your DSO if you are looking to work off campus.
So, If the prospect you have pays good enough and does not interfere with your classes & academic life. You can consider it.
For more information on part time jobs you can refer to this link: Working in the United States | Study in the States.

Hey, Yes you can do part time in the University for 19.5 hours a week. There will be on-campus opportunities available. Once you enroll you will get your Mavs ID, and using that you can log into Handshake Application, that’s where all the on-campus postings from all departments of UTA are posted, and you can apply there, using your resumes. It’s best to follow back with an email which you will mostly find in the posting.

Referrals are another best way of getting part time opportunities, so, network as much as possible.

Other than normal part time opportunities, I highly suggest you to try to get teaching assistant or research assistant position. Usually, there will be posting through mail and handshake, another best way is to impress professors with your skills and knowledge in the subject, and interest in research and experience in previous research work, because these positions are more and very helpful even more in career wise, and If you are an international student, you will get in-state tuition which will help you even more.

You can get back to me if you have any more queries.
