Which is better for MS in CS: ASU or SUNY Buffalo?

Trying to figure out between Arizona State University and SUNY Buffalo for Master’s in computer science. both seem good but very different. Can anyone share how they actually compare?

ASU is huge, like really huge lol. Tons of research going on, and they have solid AI and ML courses too. Plus, Tempe is warm all year, so if you’re not a fan of snow, that’s a bonus  They’re also super industry-connected, especially with companies in Phoenix and California. Internship scene’s pretty solid.

Hey @NS3141 Both ASU and SUNY Buffalo are good for a CS master’s but they’re quite different. ASU has a big research network, flexible courses and strong industry links, especially with West Coast tech companies. The campus is lively, but living costs in Tempe/Phoenix can be a bit high. SUNY Buffalo is more affordable in both tuition and living, with strong research in AI, data science, and systems, but it’s colder and has fewer direct West Coast industry connections.

1. Academics and Curriculum

  • ASU: Very large and well-funded CS program. Strong emphasis on research opportunities and industry collaborations.
  • SUNY Buffalo: Solid, CS program and traditional academic structure compared to ASU’s flexible approach.

2. Industry Connections and Internships

  • ASU: Located in Tempe/Phoenix with proximity to a growing tech scene. Strong ties to industry.
  • SUNY Buffalo: Closer to East Coast hubs like New York City, Boston, and Toronto.

3. Cost and Funding

  • ASU: Tuition is higher than SUNY Buffalo, and cost of living in Phoenix is moderate. Some TA/RA positions are available but competitive.
  • SUNY Buffalo: Lower tuition as part of the SUNY system, and Buffalo’s cost of living is relatively low. Better overall for budget-conscious students.

4. Weather and Lifestyle

  • ASU: Warmer climate. Large, vibrant campus.
  • SUNY Buffalo: Colder climate. Smaller, more close-knit campus experience.

5. Career Outcomes

  • ASU’s large alumni network and location can make it easier to get internships without relocating.
  • SUNY Buffalo has a good reputation among East Coast recruiters, and networking is strong in the northeastern U.S.

Buffalo is more chill tbh. Weather is kinda rough ngl (expect a snowstorm or five ) but the CS dept is actually quite underrated. Very strong in systems, security, and networks. And it’s a SUNY school so fees are a bit lighter. But less tech exposure nearby compared to ASU. You’ll prob have to rely more on remote internships or move for jobs after.
