Hey folks! So I was looking into computer science master’s programs and noticed that Arizona State University offers both MCS and MS in CS. On the surface they sound the same, but I’m guessing they’re not?
What’s the actual difference between the two? And is Arizona State University good for MS CS overall?
Would love to hear from anyone who’s been researching this too!
Okay so I looked into this a while back — MCS stands for Master of Computer Science and it’s a non-thesis, course-only program. MS CS includes a thesis or research option and is more academic-focused. Big difference if you’re planning on doing research or a PhD later!
Right! MCS is more for people who wanna learn skills and get into the industry ASAP. Like, you take classes, build projects, maybe do internships — but no research papers or thesis stress.
Hello @Pranav.112Singh
You’re right, MCS and MS CS at ASU aren’t identical. Generally, an MS CS is more research-focused, geared toward those aiming for PhDs or research-intensive careers. An MCS is typically more professionally oriented, emphasizing practical skills for industry.
ASU’s CS programs are generally well-regarded, especially in areas like AI and data science. Its overall ranking and program quality are good. For a deeper dive, check ASU’s CS department website and student reviews to see if it aligns with your specific interests and career goals.
Hope it will clarify your doubt!
