What Major Changes Are Coming to the TOEFL iBT in 2026?


Beginning January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT will undergo a major revamp, aiming to reflect the use of real-world academic English better. Here’s what’s changing:

What’s New?

  • Adaptive Format: The test adjusts the question difficulty based on your answers, providing a more personalized and accurate experience.
  • Updated Content: Focus on real, modern topics, rather than just outdated academic texts.
  • New Scoring System: Scores will range from 1 to 6, with 0.5 increments, aligned with CEFR standards* widely accepted globally.
