My son has received admit into a US university for this Spring session. But he wishes to defer it to the fall session. What is the procedure for it & will they usually allow it?

Not all universities allow admission deferment. It is up to them to accept your request, so you will have to contact the university to know the details. The procedure also varies from university to university so they will inform you of the steps you need to take. Your son may have to submit his reasons for deferment and what he plans to do with that time.
If the university accepts your deferral request, you will have to contact the DSO to adjust the date on your SEVIS and issue a new I-20.
