The U.S. has implemented significant changes impacting Indian students and professionals, making studying and working there more costly and difficult than ever before.
1. New Visa Integrity Fee: $250 (₹21,400)
Effective July 4, 2025, a new $250 Visa Integrity Fee applies to all non-immigrant visas (F, M, J, H-1B, B).
- Payable on visa approval
- Refundable only if:
- Visa rules are followed
- Exit occurs within 5 days post-expiry
- Status is legally extended
New total visa cost for F-1 students: ~$459 (₹38,500)
→ A 148% increase
2. Tighter Visa Scrutiny
Between March and May 2025, F-1 visas dropped 27% YoY.
Reasons include:
- Embassy delays and paused appointments
- Mandatory social media disclosure (last 5 years)
- Revocations due to activism, DUIs, or vague “flags”
- Longer processing times because of national security checks
3. 1% Tax on Sending Money to India
Passed under the One Big Beautiful Bill, all U.S.-to-India remittances now face a 1% tax.
→ Sending ₹5 lakh? Pay an extra ₹5,000 in taxes now.
