Should i pursue an mba as a fresher or gain work experience first?

Is it advisable to pursue an MBA as a fresher without work experience and skills? What is the ideal age? For CAT 2024, I’ll be 20 years old at the time of joining an MBA program. I noticed the average age of batches is 23-24. Should I join an MBA in this scenario, or should I gain work experience and appear for CAT 2026 with 1.5 years of work experience? Please guide me, as CAT 2024 will be my first attempt and I’m not familiar with its intricacies. Also, as a fresher, I might not fully utilize an MBA, as it requires maturity and professionalism, which can be gained through work experience. Thank you for reading my case. I look forward to your response.

Hi, not an expert in this field but I speak to a lot of people who do Masters and know quite a bit about the field. You NEED to gain work experience before doing a masters especially abroad. You will find people in classes who are much older to you coming in with work experience and the understanding of concepts can be very different if you do not have work experience. With work experience, it is also easier to get into a good masters program. A minimum of 2-3 years work experience will be suitable! An Instagram influencer Cherie Brooke talks about this, you can check her page out!

I second Anjali’s opinion, there is no point in doing an MBA as a fresher just after your UG. In India also, the course IIM offers is called PGDM (postgraduate diploma in management), it’s not a core MBA.
There is a reason why all the colleges in the US require at least 4 years of experience to pursue an MBA. Companies expect you to be on executive positions after MBA, there is no way they gonna hire anyone with no industrial experience.
I hope it helps

It’s generally better to gain 1-2 years of work experience before pursuing an MBA. Experience enhances your learning, application, and career prospects. At 20, you’d be among the youngest, which could be challenging without practical experience. Consider working first and applying for MBA programs with more experience and clarity.
