New Zealand Increases Student Work Limit to 25 Hours a Week for International Students

Good news for international students! New Zealand has officially raised the in-study work limit from 20 to 25 hours per week, effective November 3, 2025. The change applies to:

  • New student visas granted on or after Nov 3, 2025
  • Current tertiary and secondary students with valid study visas
  • Exchange and Study Abroad students, even for short-term programs

Students holding older visas with the 20-hour condition can apply for a variation or new visa by paying a NZD 325 (≈INR 16,000) fee. Those preferring to wait can make the switch during their next renewal.

Full-time work rights during academic breaks remain unchanged, while secondary students (Years 12 & 13) still require parental and school approval to work.

Nearly 41,000 students are currently eligible under this update, which also includes clearer rules for changes to courses or providers.

New Zealand’s move aims to provide greater financial flexibility and strengthen its global appeal as a study destination.
