I’m starting this fall and I’m pretty nervous going in so I was wondering if you guys had any advice on the rooms, the people, and the surrounding area. Also what would you recommend I bring when moving into my dorm that most newcomers overlook. Thanks a lot in advance!
Feeling nervous about starting college is natural. However, please be assured that you’ll find many friends who will support you and make you feel at home. At least in ASU since the number of Indian students is large there. Here are some tips on various aspects:
Dorm Room: Get familiar with the layout of your room beforehand. Many colleges provide room dimensions and possible layouts online. Once you’re in, invest a little into storage bins, and over-the-door organizers to keep you organized.
People: Reach out to your roommate(s) before moving in. Discuss preferences, habits, and what each of you will bring to avoid duplicates. Attend orientation events and social activities. They’re designed to help you meet new people and get acclimated.
Surrounding: You can explore the campus on Google Maps. See where you’re located and nearby grocery, and convenience stores. Some of the most famous places include Food city, walmart, safeway, memorial union, libraries, Mill st, and SDFC (ASU gym)
What to bring: Clothes, snacks, lots of maggi, masalas, utensils, some common medicines, electrolytes, maybe a small toolkit, laundry supplies, and of course a little school supplies.
Additional Tips
1: Keep track of your spending, especially in the first few weeks.
2: Keep track of your classes, the campus is large and classes could be in different buildings.
3: Visit the health center once just to know its location
4: Open a bank account in the first few days (Chase, BMO, and MidFirst are some good options) Open one account and then look for offers from other banks before you open an account there.
5. Try to get a used/new bike (cycle) as soon as possible
