I’ve been hearing a lot about writing an SOP for college applications and what exactly to write in it??
especially for engineering… like what topics are actually good to include? Wanna make sure i’m not just rambling random stuff. Any tips??
hey @divya_chant I was literally stuck on what to write in mine too. But after doing a bit of digging, I figured the main idea is to tell your story like why you’re into engineering what projects or internships you’ve done, and how the uni fits into your plans.
Apparently, it’s good to include stuff like:
- What got you interested in engineering (even if it’s random or personal lol)
- Your academic background + fav subjects
- Cool projects/internships you’ve worked on
- Why you picked that specific college/program
- What your goals are career-wise
- Some soft skills (like teamwork, problem-solving etc.)
Basically just keep it structured and make sure you’re not just flexing or writing your resume again
Hi @divya_chant
Ranjan’s on point and I’d just add that for engineering SOPs, the flow really matters. don’t make it sound like some super formal essay where you’re scared to be yourself. It’s okay to add a bit of your personality in there. For example, if there was a project where nothing worked at first but you still figured it out, share that. Those little stories actually stick in the reader’s mind.
Also, don’t try to dump every single thing you’ve done since school pick 2 or 3 good experiences and explain them properly, like what you did, what you learnt, and how it connects to what you want to study. And if you can tie your story to something that’s unique about that university maybe a lab, a professor’s work, or a project they’re known for it’ll show them you’ve actually researched and really want that place, not just any random uni.
Hi @divya_chant Totally get you writing an SOP can feel overwhelming at first
For engineering specifically, it’s a good idea to focus on things like:
-
What sparked your interest in engineering in the first place
-
Any projects, internships, or experiences that helped shape your passion
-
Specific areas in engineering you’re interested in and why
-
Long-term goals and how this program fits into them
-
Why you choosing that particular college (mention faculty, labs, courses, etc. if relevant)
Also, try to keep it focused and personal, not just listing achievements, but reflecting on what you learned from them. It’s more about your journey than a resume rehash.

Hello @divya_chant
Thankyou very much for your question.
While writing SOPs, one of the major areas that you have to consider is about marketing yourself. When it comes to creating engineering related course SOP, it might become tricky as we tend to include majorly about technical stuffs, through it involves element of storytelling that makes it unqiue and approachable. In your case for engineering college applications, following is the structure that you can follow to create the SOP that gives you a balalnce of both the aspects:
- An introductory paragraph sharing about your background and what led to you developing interest in the subjects to persue engineering.
- What aspects lead you to create a path towards building your career, you can involve the series of internship, projects and the usage of the technical skills.
- Since engineering is vast, which specific area are you interested to pick and how the University is adding value to it.
- The list of softskills you have gained as a result of experience of organising events, being part of college societies as it makes an impression of your capabilities away from the course work.
- Your short-term and long term goals associated with the course and how you can contribute to the same.
- The aspect of the University that you genuinely like (faculty, campus, counselling, course modules, career services) and a closing statement.
I hope the structure will help you and making your SOP stand out.
