MS in data science or artificial intelligence

I’m planning to pursue my Master’s abroad and I’m currently trying to decide between *MS in Data Science and MS in Artificial Intelligence.

Considering the current and future job market trends, especially in countries like UK and other parts of Europe, which program would offer better career opportunities and long-term growth for a fresher?

Any insights on how these two fields differ in terms of job roles, demand, and industry preference would be really helpful.

Thank you in advance!

Both AI and Data Science offer excellent career prospects, but for freshers—especially international students—an MS in Data Science with AI/ML electives tends to offer better entry-level opportunities and broader industry demand.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: AI roles (like Machine Learning Engineer or AI Researcher) are highly specialized and competitive. While they offer high salaries (e.g., ML Engineer ~£74K/year), they often require strong fundamentals in math, deep learning, and prior project experience.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Data Science, on the other hand, is in demand across multiple sectors like finance, healthcare, retail, and tech. Entry-level salaries start from £30K–£45K and can reach £90K+ in niche areas. It’s more accessible for fresh graduates, especially if you build a strong portfolio.

:pushpin: That said, an MSc alone won’t guarantee a job. Real-world projects, internships, and a solid understanding of tools like Python, SQL, Power BI, TensorFlow, etc., are critical. Many UK/Europe jobs require 2–3 years of experience, and visa sponsorship can be a hurdle.

:white_check_mark: My advice: Go for Data Science to gain broader exposure and build practical skills. Later, you can pivot deeper into AI roles through projects or certifications.

:bullseye: Action plan:

  • Work on Kaggle/GitHub projects
  • Learn Python, SQL, cloud tools (AWS/GCP), PyTorch
  • Gain internship experience
  • Build soft skills like data storytelling
  • Keep upskilling through short courses (Coursera, edX, Udemy)
