Mechanical Engineering

Hey guys, Which university is best for MS in mechanical engineering Leicester, Swansea, Hertfordshire any suggestions

If you’re choosing between the three, Swansea is the strongest option – great UK & global rankings for mechanical engineering, solid research output, and affordable fees. Leicester is good too, especially since the MSc is IMechE-accredited (helps if you want chartered status later). Hertfordshire is decent but not as well-ranked in this field, so I’d lean towards Swansea or Leicester.

For Mechanical Engineering, Swansea is usually the best pick it’s ranked high in the UK, has strong industry links, and even offers placement options. Leicester is solid too, with good research and decent global ranking. Hertfordshire is more of a practical choice, easier to get into and industry-focused, but not as highly ranked. If you want the strongest program overall, I’d lean toward Swansea.

Hi @Teja339 I was comparing these same unis a while back for Mechanical Engineering, so here’s what I figured out talking to seniors:

  • Swansea – generally considered the strongest for engineering out of the three. The coursework is solid, and they’ve got good research in materials/aero/mech. The city is small but cheaper to live in.

  • Leicester – decent option, more balanced overall. Not as research-heavy as Swansea, but the student community is bigger and the city is livelier.

  • Hertfordshire – okay if you want to be closer to London, but in terms of mechanical reputation, it’s not as strong as the other two.

Most people I spoke to said if mechanical is your main focus, Swansea is the safer bet. Leicester is fine if you want a bigger city vibe. Hertfordshire feels more like a backup choice.

hey @Teja339 If you’re comparing Leicester, Swansea, and Hertfordshire for MS in Mechanical Engineering

  • Swansea feels like the strongest for mechanical specifically. Their engineering faculty has good links with industry (Tata Steel, Rolls-Royce, etc.) and they even offer year-long placements, which can really help with jobs later.

  • Leicester is overall more prestigious and ranked higher as a uni, so if brand name and reputation matter to you, that’s a safe pick.

  • Hertfordshire is more practical and has solid employability stats, but feedback about admin and support isn’t always great.

So, if you want pure engineering + industry exposure → Swansea.
If you want a well-rounded, recognized uni name → Leicester.
If you’re after affordability + decent jobs → Hertfordshire works.
