Japan to Offer Scholarships to Attract 5,000 Indian Students in 3 Years

Japan is stepping up efforts to attract more Indian students as traditional study-abroad destinations such as the US, UK, and Australia tighten visa and eligibility requirements. The Japanese government is targeting 5,000 Indian students over the next three years, supported by new scholarships and fellowships.

A high-level delegation of vice-chancellors from 30 Indian universities, led by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), visited Japan from January 12–17 to strengthen academic and research ties. Meetings were held with Japan’s education ministry and top universities, including the University of Tokyo.

Key highlights for Indian students

  • Scholarships & fellowships planned specifically for Indian students
  • First year of degree taught in English, with Japanese language training included
  • Student & faculty exchanges between India and Japan
  • Job opportunities in Japan for graduates with Japanese language skills
  • More Japanese students are coming to India to study Yoga, spirituality, and STEM subjects

The move aims to boost student mobility, joint research, and dual-degree programmes between the two countries.

As traditional destinations tighten visa and eligibility rules, countries like Japan are emerging as strong alternatives offering scholarships, English-taught degrees, and built-in work pathways.
