Is a 170 in GRE Quant harder than the old 800?

Okay, so I was checking out GRE toppers’ success stories, and I saw people flexing their 170 in Quant. But wasn’t the old GRE out of 800? Does that mean 170 now is like the same as 800 back then, or is it actually harder to get? Also, do universities care about this change, or do they still compare scores the same way? Kinda confused.

Dude, same question! I feel like 170 seems perfect, but 800 sounds way cooler. :joy: No idea if unis think 170 is as impressive.

Haha, yeah! But from what I’ve read, 170 in Quant now is basically equivalent to 800 from the old test. They changed the scale, but the percentile rankings are kinda similar.

Yep, exactly. A 170 today is like top 3%, just like 800 was. The difference is, now it’s way more competitive because so many people score 170. So in a way, yeah, it’s harder!

And unis know this. They don’t just look at raw scores, they also check percentiles. A 170 today means the same as an 800 back then, so they won’t think it’s less impressive.

But bro, getting 170 is no joke. GRE toppers’ success stories are full of people practicing like crazy for months. So whether it’s 170 or 800, it takes effort.
