I am currently attending Dallas College and working towards an associate’s degree in cybersecurity, which I expect to complete by May 2025. Initially, I was studying computer science and had planned to transfer to an in-state university, so I still have 30 transferable core credits from that program. However, I changed my major to the Associate of Applied Science in Cybersecurity, intending to enter the workforce directly after completing this degree.
Recently, I have had a change of heart and realized that I dislike both fields and do not want to pursue anything technical. I am still considering transferring to the in-state school (with the 30 credits) and doing a BBA instead.
The security degree has 57 credits, so that plus the 30 I already have would be 87 credits from community college. If I transferred, then I would need to do 90 more credits for the BBA (177 credits in total). Texas has some rule that says if you go over 150 credits, then you can be charged out-of-state tuition and denied financial aid. For the school, OOS tuition is 20k a semester, so 40k for a full year. I qualify for 3 scholarships, but after I go over the 150 limit, then I don’t know how I’m going to pay off the money.
Yes, I realize that I’m insane for not just choosing to do a business admin associate’s degree to begin with. My parents just want me to finish out the security degree just to get the piece of paper and figure out the rest later. An advisor recently told me to scrap getting the degree and just do business classes and then transfer over later.
If you were me, what would you do?
