How to get good letters of recommendation for college abroad?

So I’m planning to apply abroad for my undergrad but not sure how this whole letter of recommendation thing works… who do I ask, what do they write, does it really matter that much? I’ve got decent grades but not like topper-topper.

Hey @nerdvana401 yes letters of recommendation (LORs)** do matter especially when applying for undergrad abroad. Usually, you need 1–2 LORs, and they should be written by your school teachers, counselors, or principal—basically someone who knows you well academically or through extracurriculars. They write about your strengths, character, achievements, work ethic, and potential to do well in college. It’s okay if you’re not a topper what matters is how well they describe your uniqueness and growth.

Yes it matters a lot, if you are applying to top universities. Even if your grades are not the best, a strong letter of recommendation can show your personality, work ethic etc. Ask teachers who actually know you(not just any random subject topper teacher), maybe someone who taught you in 11th or even 10th but saw how you grew. Tell them what you are applying for and why. Some might ask you to write a rough draft yourself.

@nerdvana401 For undergrad applications, a letter of recommendation is basically a teacher vouching for you telling the university what kind of student you are beyond just marks. You usually ask a teacher who’s taught you recently, especially in a subject related to what you want to study. The important thing is, they should actually know you well so they can talk about your attitude, effort, and how you are in class.

It’s not about fancy words a good LOR has small real stories. Like maybe that time your project wasn’t working but you still managed to fix it, or when you took extra effort to help a classmate. Even if you’re not the topper, if they can show you’re consistent and willing to learn, it makes a big difference.

So yeah, pick someone who’s actually seen your journey, not just a “famous” teacher who barely remembers your name. That’s what will make it work.
