How to answer “Why do you want to study in the US?” for F1 visa?

Hey guys, I’ve got my F1 visa interview coming up and I’m a little stuck on this one question, “Why do you want to study in the US?” What’s the best way to answer this without sounding fake or nervous?

Hi @Shrey,
I know this is one of the trickiest questions since you can’t say anything that directly shows you want to settle in the US, and you also can’t give a long-winded answer. I was personally improvising my response right up until the last moment.

Here are a few key takeaways that worked for me:

  1. Start by mentioning what you appreciate about the US education system – maybe the practical learning approach, diverse classrooms, or global exposure.

  2. Then highlight what’s unique about your university or specifically the course you’re pursuing – like its curriculum, specializations, or faculty.

  3. Finally, explain how this course and the US education system will help you achieve your long-term goals, which should clearly be based in India.

This way, your answer stays focused, shows your intent to return to India, and still sounds genuine and well-prepared.
