Hey @prettyflower I can share a bit from my own journey since I’ve joined the MEng in Telecommunications and Information Security at UVic for Fall 2025. UVic may not be in the absolute top 3 like UOT or UBC, but it’s consistently ranked in the global top 400 and within Canada’s top 15, which is solid. What made me choose it is how strong the program is in our area the faculty, the course structure, and the lab work are all very practical and aligned with industry needs.

Another big plus is UVic’s co-op program, which is one of the best in Canada. For a field like telecom and security, getting that hands-on industry experience during the degree really helps when you step out into the job market. On top of that, the campus has a really friendly, multicultural vibe, and it’s easy to feel at home as an international student.

If you’re seriously looking at UVic, I’d say it’s definitely worth it. And if you’ve got more doubts about the program, co-ops, or even applications, feel free to reply I’m happy to share whatever I know.

Hi @prettyflower, University of Victoria (UVic) is actually a solid option in Canada, especially if you’re looking at Telecommunications and Information Security. It’s not usually in the very top tier like UofT, UBC, or McGill, but it’s well-regarded in research areas tied to electrical engineering, communications, and cybersecurity.

UVic has strong faculty in telecom and network security, and the research environment is pretty active. It’s also known for good industry connections, especially with tech companies in British Columbia and the west coast. The campus is student-friendly, and living in Victoria is a lot calmer (and cheaper) than in big cities like Toronto or Vancouver.

Ranking-wise, it usually sits in the top 10–15 universities in Canada, which makes it a good choice if you want a balance of quality academics, research opportunities, and a more affordable lifestyle. Not hyped-up, but definitely respected.

If you’re aiming for research in security/telecom, UVic is a strong contender. If you want maximum brand value and global recognition, schools like UofT or UBC might edge it out.

I looked into this when shortlisting universities

So University of Victoria canada ranking and review is actually decent. not in the top 5 but like in top 15-20 most of the time. QS and Maclean’s keep it around there. It’s pretty known for research and tech programs, especially if ur into niche stuff like telecom + info security. And the profs there are chill + accessible, from what i heard.

hey @prettyflower

Real Student Buzz (From Reddit)

Some students say:

“UVic is a well-established school… smaller uni… excellent research for its size”
“Great school and great social life. Expensive but beautiful city/nature”
“UVic is a pretty good school… the campus is safe and beautiful… people are nice”
(Reddit)

Others point out challenges:

“Housing is a problem, cost of living is high… smaller university so you don’t get access to the benefits of larger unis” (Reddit)
“Work-study programs including co-op are hard to get in… disadvantages of studying on the Island” (Reddit)

If you’re after a program that’s well-ranked, research-strong in the telecom space, with a coastal campus vibe, and don’t mind navigating housing or mixed co-op availability—UVic can be a great fit.
