Anyone know how to get admission in Australia for MS? Like is it super competitive or chill?? Feeling kinda lost … IDK if my scores are enough or if i need work experience or what ![]()
Not that hard tbh if u meet the basics like undergrad degree + decent GPA (like 60-65% and up depending on uni), IELTS/TOEFL scores, and SOP… some unis don’t even need work ex unless it’s MBA or niche programs. Go through the uni websites and apply directly or thru agents if u want. Try aiming for Group of Eight unis if u can tho!
-
Pick a course + university (e.g., Monash, UNSW, Deakin, RMIT, etc.)
-
Check if you meet the basic academic requirement — most unis need 60–70% or above in your bachelor’s. It’s not super strict unless you’re applying to top unis.
-
IELTS or PTE – You’ll need to prove English skills (usually IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0).
-
Work experience? Not compulsory for most MS programs! Some unis may ask for it in MBA or specialized master’s, but for general MS (like in CS, Data, Engineering, etc.), it’s optional.
-
You apply directly through the university’s portal or with help from study abroad platforms.
less competitive unis
- University of Southern Queensland (USQ)
- Charles Sturt University
- Federation University
- Edith Cowan University (ECU)
- Central Queensland University (CQU)
- University of New England (UNE)
Hey! Great question totally get why you’re feeling lost, applying abroad can be confusing at first ![]()
Here’s a quick breakdown about getting admission for MS in Australia:
How competitive is it?
It really depends on the university and program. Top universities like the Group of Eight (Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, UNSW, etc.) are definitely competitive — they look for strong academics, a solid SOP (Statement of Purpose), and sometimes relevant work or research experience. But there are also many good universities where the process is quite chill if you meet the basic requirements.
Scores & academics:
Most unis ask for at least 60–70% (or equivalent CGPA) in your undergrad. Higher-ranked courses might look for around 75%+. If your grades aren’t amazing, you can sometimes balance that out with a great SOP, relevant projects, and strong letters of recommendation.
Do you need work experience?
For most technical MS programs, it’s not mandatory. But it definitely helps, especially if your undergrad grades are average. Having internships, projects, research papers, or work experience makes your application stronger.
Other requirements:
IELTS or TOEFL (usually 6.5–7 overall for IELTS)
Updated CV
Statement of Purpose (very important!)
Letters of Recommendation (usually 2–3)
Sometimes portfolio or GRE (rare for Australia, but check your course)
Tip:
Start early — shortlist unis, check each program’s specific requirements, and write a SOP that shows why you’re interested in that program, your career goals, and what makes you a good fit.
And btw, there’s a great way that has helped many students: Admitio.
