How can I increase my chances of getting into UC Berkeley's CS graduate program?

I’m applying to UC Berkeley’s CS grad program – what should I focus on in my application? Like what are the must-haves to impress the admissions committee for UC Berkeley’s Computer Science graduate program?

Berkeley’s CS program is super competitive. Focus is key. Top priorities are research experience, a compelling Statement of Purpose (SOP), and strong letters of recommendation.

Everyone says research is important, but what kind of research? Like, do I need publications in top-tier conferences?

Publications definitely help, but it’s not just about the quantity. The quality and impact of your research are more important. Even if you haven’t published, demonstrate your research skills through projects, presentations, or contributions to open-source. Your recommenders can speak to your potential.

Beyond research, Berkeley also values a strong academic foundation. A high GPA, especially in core CS courses, is important. Also, while the GRE isn’t always the primary focus, strong scores, especially in the quantitative section, can definitely bolster your application. And don’t underestimate the Personal History Statement (PHS). It’s your chance to share your unique background and perspectives.
