The French Ambassador to India, Thierry Mathou, recently announced France’s goal of hosting 30,000 Indian students by 2025, emphasizing the importance of strengthening people-to-people exchanges. This initiative was first announced by President Macron during his visit to India in January 2023 and reaffirmed during PM Modi’s visit to France in July. During this visit, a five-year Schengen circulation visa for Indian alumni was introduced, replacing the previous two-year post-study visa for students pursuing master’s programs in France, significantly enhancing post-study work opportunities.
In July, PM Modi announced that Indian students pursuing a master’s degree in France will be granted a five-year long-term post-study visa, extending the earlier two-year work visa. This announcement was made during his address to the Indian community at La Seine Musicale in Paris. To attract more Indian students, France is offering English-taught courses and preparatory French language programs for those wishing to master the language. In support of these efforts, a major education fair is scheduled for mid-October, showcasing the opportunities available to Indian students.
The French envoy also highlighted growing economic ties, with bilateral trade reaching €16 billion in 2023. France aims to expand investments in luxury, agriculture, and retail, aligning with India’s Make in India policy.
France’s strategy is driven by a desire to strengthen cultural and economic ties with India while positioning itself as a top destination for higher education. The extended visa offers greater work opportunities, making France more attractive compared to other countries. Indian students benefit from affordable education, job prospects, and a welcoming environment, helping France stand out among global study destinations.
