Confused between PTE General and Academic – which one should I take?

I saw there’s PTE General and PTE Academic?? Are they same thing or different? And also what’s the PTE exam fee these days?

They’re different bro :sweat_smile: PTE academic is for study abroad, unis usually ask for it. It’s accepted in UK, USA, Aus, NZ etc. PTE general is more for job or migration stuff, not really for university admission. So if you are planning to study abroad, just go for academic.

@error4949Zoya they’re not the same. PTE Academic is the one you’ll actually need for studying abroad (Canada, UK, Australia, etc.), while PTE General is more like a language test/certificate but not used for visas or admissions.

Right now in India, the PTE Academic fee is about ₹15,900. Just double-check on Pearson’s site before booking since it can change, and you can get coupons oo.

PTE Academic is the one most universities and visa authorities ask for it’s focused on academic English (listening, reading, speaking, writing) and is used for study abroad and migration purposes. PTE General, on the other hand, is more like a general English proficiency test and isn’t really accepted for university admissions or visas.

As for the fee, it depends a bit on the country where you’re taking it, but in most places it’s around $200–$250 USD (₹15k–₹17k in India). Best bet is to check the official Pearson site for your country since prices can vary slightly.

If you’re applying to universities, go for PTE Academic that’s the one that matters.

PTE Academic = the one you need for study abroad, visas, and immigration. Almost all universities abroad accept this (like IELTS/TOEFL).

PTE General = not for admissions. It’s more of a certificate for work/immigration purposes in some countries, but not useful if your goal is uni applications.

So if you’re planning to study abroad → take PTE Academic. :white_check_mark:

As for the exam fee in India (2025) → it’s around ₹17,000–17,500 INR (after taxes). The price can vary slightly depending on the test center.
