Chip design/microelectronic course in germany

Hi everyone, I’m looking for guidance on which university in Germany is best for studying chip design or microelectronics (Master’s level). Which institutions have the strongest programs and industry connections for VLSI, integrated circuits, or semiconductor design?

Hello Vineet,
For studying chip design and microelectronics at the Master’s level in Germany, these universities are considered the top choice due to their strong programs and industry connections:-

  1. Technical University of Munich (TUM) - Master’s program in Microelectronics and Chip Design is highly regarded for its practical approach and focus on VLSI design. Provides strong industry connections with leading companies like Siemens and Infineon
  2. RWTH Aachen University - Master’s program in Electrical Engineering offers a robust curriculum with a strong emphasis on research and innovation
  3. TU Berlin - strong option for engineering, including microelectronics and VLSI design, with a good reputation and industry connections
  4. University of Stuttgart - Master’s in Electrical Engineering with modules focused on VLSI design and embedded systems, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical training.
  5. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) - KIT’s Electrical Engineering and Information Technology program includes specializations relevant to VLSI and microelectronics.

Hey @Vineet_chaturvedi TUM is probably the top pick if you want a strong microelectronics/chip design master’s – they even have a dedicated program for it. TU Dresden is also amazing because it’s right in Silicon Saxony, so you’re surrounded by chip companies and fabs. KIT and RWTH Aachen are solid too if you’re looking for strong research + industry links. If you’re into analog/mixed-signal, Ulm University has a great rep.

If you’re aiming for industry connections, I’d say Dresden or TUM. For research-heavy work, TUM, KIT, or Ulm. Also, look out for programs that give you hands-on chip projects or cleanroom access those make a huge difference.

@Vineet_chaturvedi I looked into this a while back, and honestly, Germany has some really solid options if you’re aiming for chip design or microelectronics. TU Munich is one of the top choices with its Microelectronics & Chip Design program, really strong in VLSI and IC design, plus close ties to Infineon in Munich. TU Dresden stands out because it’s in Silicon Saxony Europe’s biggest semiconductor hub so you get exposure to companies like GlobalFoundries, Bosch, and even TSMC. RWTH Aachen is also great, especially since the program there builds in a long industrial internship, which makes it easier to transition into jobs. Then there’s KIT (Karlsruhe) with solid FPGA and SoC labs, and FAU Erlangen if you’re more into power electronics or analog, since they work closely with Fraunhofer IISB. So, if you’re leaning toward VLSI and IC design, TUM, Dresden, and RWTH are the strongest bets, while KIT and FAU shine more on the analog/power side.

Hi ,

For a Master’s in VLSI or microelectronics in Germany, top universities include TUM, RWTH Aachen, University of Stuttgart, KIT, and TU Dresden. They offer strong programs in chip design and integrated circuits, hands-on projects, and excellent industry connections.TU Dresden is especially notable for its location in “Silicon Saxony,” Europe’s largest semiconductor hub.
