Changing major concentration after admission possible?

Hello,

I applied to Texas State through the Common App and chose Physics as my major. I would like to pursue the Astronomy concentration within that major. Is it possible to switch to that specific track after admission, or is a new application required?

I was looking at their Physics program too! I didn’t apply for that concentration specifically, but from what I understand for most US universities, you’re admitted into the broader “Physics” major first.

The concentration/specialization is usually something you declare later, maybe in your second year after completing intro courses. It’s probably an internal process, not something that requires a new application. But definitely wait for an official confirmation.

Did you try emailing the department? The contact for the Physics undergrad advisor should be on their website. They give the best advice.

Thanks, Aditya! That’s a relief to hear. I was worried I applied for the wrong thing. I haven’t emailed them yet, was checking if anyone here had firsthand experience. I’ll find the advisor’s email and shoot them a message. Hopefully, it’s as simple as filling out a form later!

My cousin did his undergrad there (not in Physics though, he was in Engineering) and he changed his specialization track like twice :joy:. It’s usually no big deal once you’re in the department.

The admission is to the university and then to the main college (probably College of Science and Engineering). The major is Physics, and Astronomy is just a focus area within it.

But yeah, emailing the Department of Physics’ undergraduate advisor is the best move. They’ll tell you the exact process. Just ask, “What is the procedure to declare the Astronomy concentration after being admitted into the Physics major?”

Let us know what they say! Might be useful for others also. @Arnav20
