Has it ever happened that a university caught someone lying in their application essay or other stuff like resume or forms? I’m not saying I wanna lie but like… there’s a fine line between making something sound better and straight up lying. How much can you “tweak” your SOP or profile without it being risky?

hey @abhishek_12 Yeah, unis do catch people if they outright lie. it could be through background checks, document verification, or even just inconsistencies in what you write vs. what you can actually talk about in interviews. They take integrity super seriously.
Tweaking is fine. Like framing your experience in a way that highlights your strengths, showing impact, or making it sound more professional.
Straight-up lying (inventing jobs, fake internships, made-up awards) i super risky and not worth it.

But there’s a safe line: framing is fine, faking is not. You can highlight what you learned from even small projects or internships and show their relevance, but never invent experiences. Admissions committees value honesty and clarity over flashy claims, so it’s always better to be genuine and just present your story in the strongest way possible.
They definitely can. I dont know about all universities but some do background checks especially for postgrad. If you fake internships, scores, or say u published a paper that doesn’t exist, there’s a chance it comes back at you.
Tweaking is okay if you are just making things sound more polished… like instead of “helped in a project,” you write “contributed to XYZ module in ABC project”. That’s fine. just don’t say you were a team lead if you weren’t
