How did you prepare, what resources did you use, what documents did you carry, and how did you mentally gear up for the big day?
Sure! Sharing my F1 visa journey in case it helps someone out there.
Preparation:
Once I received my I-20, I paid the SEVIS fee and filled out the DS-160 form carefully, double-checking every detail. I booked the visa appointment early to get a suitable date. I started preparing for the interview by going through all the commonly asked questions and reflecting on my own story — my background, why I chose the course, and how I planned to fund my studies (I’m going through an education loan).
Resources I Used:
I went through YouTube videos for mock interviews, Reddit and Yocket for real-life student experiences, and used ChatGPT to polish my answers. Practicing my responses helped me stay calm and confident — especially for questions like “Why this course?”, “How will you fund your education?”, and “What are your plans after graduation?”
Documents I Carried:
I made sure all documents were neatly arranged in a file with labelled sections. These included:
Passport, visa appointment confirmation, and DS-160
I-20 (signed)
SEVIS receipt
Loan sanction letter and supporting financial docs
Academic records (transcripts, certificates)
Work experience documents
Admission offer letter
Passport-size photos
And every document that my answers could trigger.
Interview Day:
My visa interview was at the Chennai consulate. I reached on time and dressed formally. The actual interview was very short — just 2–3 questions around my course, funding, and future plans. I answered honestly and kept my responses to the point with making it sure that I tell him that my future plans are in India. I was given 221G slip for social media screening but after 17 days it was approved.
Mental Prep:
To be honest, I was nervous the night before. But I reminded myself that I’ve worked hard to reach this point and stayed focused on my goal. I practiced calm breathing and didn’t overthink it. What helped me the most was knowing my story well and staying true to it.
If you’re preparing — just be yourself, stay clear and confident, and don’t over-rehearse. Wishing you all the best for your journey ahead!
