UK Student Visa Applications Jump 29% Despite Stricter Post-Study Rules

In a surprising development, the UK has seen a 29% rise in student visa applications between January and May 2025, despite introducing more rigid immigration rules. According to the UK Home Office, 76,400 international students applied for visas during this period, compared to the same timeframe in 2024. May alone saw 18,500 applications, representing a 19% year-over-year increase.

This growth follows major reforms to the UK’s Graduate Route and settlement pathway. Notable changes include:

Post-study work duration cut from two years to 18 months

Stricter English language requirements for students and dependents

Longer settlement track, increasing from 5 to 10 years

Enhanced skill benchmarks for education and employment

Despite concerns, the intense interest shows the UK remains a popular destination for Indian students. A UK Master’s degree, typically shorter and more affordable (₹18–30 lakhs), continues to offer substantial academic and career value.
