Can I study in Australia without IELTS or PTE?

by Gayatri13

Hey! I’m planning to apply to universities in Australia but I’m not sure if I have to take IELTS or PTE. Are there any unis that accept Indian students without these tests? Would love to know if someone’s been through this.

Yeah, totally possible! Some unis let you skip IELTS or PTE if you studied in English medium for a few years—like if your school taught entirely in English. I’ve seen friends get into places like the University of Adelaide and Macquarie Uni with just a letter from their school saying their education was in English. But it really depends on the course too. Just make sure to double-check with the uni.

Yep, backing this up! My cousin got into Deakin without IELTS just by submitting her 12th marksheet and a medium of instruction letter. Some unis also accept alternatives like the Duolingo test, which is way easier and can be done from home. Just shoot an email to the admissions team—they’re usually super helpful and will tell you exactly what they need.

Yes, you can study in Australia without IELTS or PTE but only in certain cases, and it depends on the university and visa requirements.

University Admission Without IELTS/PTE

Many Australian universities accept alternative proofs of English proficiency, such as:

A. Other English Tests

TOEFL iBT

Duolingo English Test (DET)– accepted by some universities

Cambridge English (CAE/C1 Advanced)**

B. Waiver Conditions

You may get an IELTS/PTE waiver if:

You studied in an English-medium school for 2+ years

You completed previous **degrees in English

You’re from a country where English is the official/native language.
