What to choose as a B.com graduate: Ms in Business Analytics or Ms in Finance in the US?

I’m an Indian student looking for some guidance.

My qualifications are: a Bachelor of Commerce from IGNOU with a first division, I cleared my Chartered Accountancy exams in 2021, and recently completed my CPA Australia certification in 2024. I also have two years of work experience at a private bank here in India.

I’m planning to pursue a Master’s in the USA and have applied to these universities for either a Master’s in Business Analytics or a Master’s in Finance:

  1. Georgia State University - MS in Finance (I’ve already received an admit!)
  2. University of North Texas - MS in Business Analytics
  3. Fordham University - MS in Finance (I’ve also received an admit, but it’s very expensive!)

My main concern is affordability. Given my qualifications and work experience, which field – Business Analytics or Finance – would you recommend I choose for my Master’s in the USA?

With those qualifications, you have got a strong profile, but US education is expensive. You should definitely prioritize that. Between Finance and Business Analytics, you need to look at which programs offer more scholarships or assistantships. Also, which city has a lower cost of living? Georgia State and North Texas are in different states, the cost of living would be different.

But also, you need to consider your long-term goals. With CA and CPA, Finance makes sense, but Business Analytics is booming. From what I’ve read, Business Analytics roles are in high demand across industries, and the salaries are competitive. With your background, you could bridge the gap between finance and data, which is a very valuable skill set.
