How to write SOP when switching from Mechanical to IT?

Okay so like I want to go into IT but I’ve studied mechanical till now. How do I even write a SOP? How to write something when I literally have zero experience in coding … do universities even consider students like that?

Hey same here. I’m from electrical and applying for CS😭 It’s not about how much you already know but why you want to switch. Write in your SOP how to write your story, what got you interested in IT? Maybe write about some course if you took for IT specifically? Or some project? Even if it’s small, it counts. and show your eagerness to learn, that’s what they look for.

You don’t need to fake like you’re some tech expert just be honest. Talk about your background in mechanical and then focus on transferable skills like problem-solving, maths, logic etc. Then you can explain clearly why you want to move into IT. Show them that you’re already doing something about it like online courses, certifications or anything related. That’s what makes a good SOP how to write it with a shift in mind. They care more about intent + potential than your current branch.

hey @_rockin_rohan Honestly lot of people switch fields and universities know that. For your SOP, focus on explaining why you’re interested in IT now. You can talk about what sparked your interest maybe through self-learning, YouTube tutorials, tech news, or how you realized IT is where your passion lies. Even if you have no coding experience, mention that you’re actively trying to learn (like through online courses or small projects). Also, show how your mechanical background gave you problem-solving or analytical skills, which are very useful in IT. The key is to show genuine motivation and a clear plan to grow in the field. Lots of students from non-CS backgrounds do well in IT—just be honest.

Hi @_rockin_rohan

I can relate to this because my own journey has been quite a shift. I started out in Mechanical during ITI, then moved to Electronics and Communication in my B.Tech, and now I’ve been admitted into a Master’s in Information Security. In my SOP, I focus on showing how each step built skills that connect to my current goal. Mechanical gave me a strong base in precision, problem-solving, and working with complex systems. ECE introduced me to networks, communication systems, and some programming basics, which sparked my interest in the digital side of engineering. From there, I explored cybersecurity through courses, projects, and self-learning, which made me realize this is where I want to specialize. Universities do consider students like us if we can properly showcase our abilities whether through internships, projects, hackathons, or any other relevant experiences. Even though my path wasn’t a straight line, I use it to highlight adaptability, continuous learning, and genuine curiosity qualities that stand out in any application. So, focus on Presenting your interests, vision, and adaptability to the course which you’re planning to apply.
