Can GPA override perfect scores at top universities?

Can a student with perfect standardized test scores, compelling essays, and impressive extracurriculars be denied admission to US Universities solely due to a lower GPA?

While perfect test scores and impressive extracurriculars are definitely a huge plus, GPA is still a very significant factor in US university admissions. They look at your GPA as a consistent, long-term reflection of your academic performance.

Yeah, I’ve heard that too. My friend studying at UCLA told me that they look at the whole package, but GPA is like the foundation. If that’s shaky, the rest might not hold up as well.

But if everything else is exceptional, shouldn’t they overlook a slightly lower GPA?

It’s not that simple. US universities practice holistic admissions. They’re trying to build a diverse and well-rounded class. So, while your test scores and activities show potential, your GPA shows your ability to handle academic rigor over a sustained period. They want to know you can handle the demands of their programs.
