From September 2, 2025, the US will largely end its “Dropbox” visa interview waiver program. This means most H-1B, L-1, F-1, O-1 renewals, and even applications for children under 14 and seniors over 79, will now require an in-person interview at a US consulate.
Key Changes
Interview waivers scrapped for most non-immigrant visas, including H-1B (and H-4).
Only limited exemptions: Some tourist visa renewals (B-1/B-2) and diplomatic visas (A, G, NATO, etc.) still qualify.
B-1/B-2 renewals are allowed within 12 months of expiry if the application is made from the home country, the applicant was 18 or older when the visa was issued, and there have been no prior visa issues.
Impact: Longer wait times, higher demand for interview slots, and travel delays, especially in high-volume countries like India.
Some Dropbox appointments in August–September have already been canceled, requiring earlier interviews. Immigration advocates warn this could hit Indian families hard, particularly children of skilled immigrants facing backlog issues.
