Path to becoming a Dental Hygienist in Canada/USA after BDS from India?

by Bhavya4637

Hey everyone! I’ve done my BDS from India and I’m exploring career options abroad. I was wondering — is it possible to become a Dental Hygienist in Canada or the US after BDS? If yes, what kind of course would I need to take, and how long would it take? Any info would be super helpful!

Yes, totally possible! A lot of BDS grads from India go this route, especially in Canada. You’ll need to take a Dental Hygiene program there, which is usually around 2 to 3 years depending on the college. Some schools might even give you credit for your BDS background, so it’s worth checking with them directly. Good luck!

Adding to that — in Canada, look into programs at colleges like George Brown, Fanshawe, or Vancouver College of Dental Hygiene. They’re pretty popular among international students. The keyword to search is “Dental Hygiene diploma for internationally trained dentists” — it’ll bring up some helpful options.

Also, just to give you a heads-up, getting into these programs can be competitive because domestic students apply too. But your BDS definitely gives you an edge with the science background. Just make sure your transcripts and English test scores (like IELTS) are ready when applying.
