New Zealand is rolling out significant changes to its student visa system ahead of the 2026 academic year, aiming to make the process smoother and more transparent for international students, including those from India.

Key Updates

Apply Early: Visa demand is expected to peak between October 2025 and March 2026. Apply at least 3 months before travel to avoid delays. Early applicants (with a 6+ month application timeline) may receive approval in principle, allowing them to plan their tuition and fund transfers in advance.

New Online System: As of August 18, 2025, student visas (Pathway, Fee-Paying, Scholarship, Exchange, etc.) must be submitted via the enhanced Immigration Online system. Drafts in the old system will expire after 17 Sept 2025.

Stricter Documentation: Immigration NZ now requires stronger proof of funds, clearer evidence of genuine study intent, and full compliance with visa rules.

Pathway Visa Rules: Applications missing valid course enrollment proof or offers of place will likely be rejected.

Expanded Work Rights: As of 3 November 2025, eligible students can work up to 25 hours/week (up from 20). Current visa holders may need to apply for a variation of conditions to benefit.
