Mitsui Launches Fully-Funded Scholarship for Indian Students to Study in Japan

Mitsui & Co., a big global trading and investment company, has launched the 2025 Mitsui Scholarship Program. It’s a fully-funded chance to study in Japan for 5 years, starting with language learning and followed by a full undergraduate degree.

You’ll first learn Japanese for 1 year, and then study for 4 years at a top Japanese university. It’s perfect for students interested in engineering, science, business, or social sciences.

Scholarship Highlights

Duration: 5 years

1 year: Japanese language training

4 years: Undergraduate studies at a Japanese university

Fields Offered:

Sciences & Engineering: Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, ICT, etc.

Social Sciences & Business: Management, Finance, Law, Economics, etc. (Medical and Veterinary fields excluded)

Eligibility Criteria

Indian citizens below 21 years

Minimum 80% in HSC/SSC (CBSE or ICSE)

Subject requirements based on stream

Japanese Language Proficiency: JLPT N3 preferred, N4 acceptable if preparing for N3*

Financial Support

Living allowance: JPY 145,000/month (~₹85,000)

Accommodation subsidy: Up to JPY 25,000/month (~₹14,500)

One-time arrival allowance: JPY 50,000 (~₹30,000)

Full tuition fees covered

One-way airfare from India to Japan

Key Dates

Applications open: May 1 – June 30, 2025

Language training begins: April 2026

University admission: April 2027 (via EJU exam)

*N3 refers to a level in the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) - a standardized test used to measure a person’s ability to understand and use Japanese.

N5 – Basic beginner (easiest)

N4 – Lower intermediate

N3 – Intermediate level

What Does N3 Mean?

If you have N3 level proficiency, you can:

Understand everyday Japanese conversations

Read and understand simple news articles or essays

Recognize about 650–700 kanji (Chinese characters used in Japanese writing)

Know around 3,750–4,000 Japanese words

It’s a middle-level certification, showing you’re comfortable with basic and some advanced Japanese, which is why it’s often preferred for academic programs and scholarships in Japan.
